Overview

UFH Design & Layouts

A full underfloor heating design ties four things together: what each room loses, what the floor construction can deliver, how the heat source wants to be run, and how the occupants will actually use the space. Get any one of them wrong and the system either underperforms or costs more to run than it should.

We produce the complete design as a single coordinated package. Heat loss is calculated room by room from the real build-up. Required floor output is compared against what the screed, pipe spacing and finish can achieve at the design flow temperature — and where it falls short, we tell you what has to change: tighter centres, a higher flow temperature, or supplementary emitters in the one room that needs them.

The output is a drawing set an installer can work from without phoning anyone, plus the commissioning figures needed to prove the system on handover.

Floor plans with room names, the floor build-up including screed type and depth, intended floor finishes, the fabric specification or target U-values, the heat source and its design flow temperature, and the design internal and external temperatures. If any of it is undecided we will proceed on a stated assumption and mark it clearly.

Yes, and it is most of our current workload. Underfloor heating and heat pumps suit each other, but only when the output is achievable at 35–40°C flow. We calculate that explicitly per room and tell you which rooms — usually bathrooms and rooms with heavy floor coverings — will not make it without a change to centres, build-up or finish.

As a different design problem, not a variation on screed. Output per square metre is lower, response is faster, and the achievable figure depends heavily on the plate or diffusion layer specified. We calculate on the actual system's published output data and flag rooms where the numbers do not work.

Yes — design flow rate, circuit pressure drop, balancing valve setting and required flow temperature per manifold, presented as a sheet the commissioning engineer fills in on site. It is part of the standard package, not an extra.

Yes. Tell us the system and we design to its published output tables, component range and installation requirements. Many clients standardise on one or two manufacturers and we hold those as defaults on their account.
