Manifold & Zoning Plans

Manifold position and zone allocation get decided late and casually, and both decisions are expensive to reverse. A manifold in the wrong cupboard means long dead legs and awkward access for the life of the building. Zones that ignore occupancy mean paying to heat rooms nobody is in.

We plan manifolds and zones as part of the design rather than as an afterthought. Manifold locations are chosen for balanced loop lengths, sensible pipe routing, real access for servicing, and enough space for the pump group and blending valve. Port counts allow for spare capacity. Zoning follows how the building is actually occupied — sleeping and living areas separated, bathrooms treated on their own where their requirement differs, and heating-only zones distinguished from those with setback schedules.

The output includes the control schedule, so the electrician and the commissioning engineer are working from the same document as the pipe installer.

There is no universal answer — it depends on the building's occupancy pattern, the control regime and the applicable regulations. We propose a strategy with the reasoning stated and the cost implication noted, and you decide. What we will always flag is a proposal where zone count adds control hardware without changing how anyone actually uses the space.

We will work with the space allocated, and we will tell you plainly when it does not work — insufficient depth for the pump group, no service access, or loop lengths pushed beyond sensible limits. It is much cheaper to hear that at design stage than on site.

We produce the control schedule and wiring centre arrangement so the electrician has an unambiguous document — zone, thermostat, actuator, and the boiler or heat pump interlock. Full electrical design and certification remains with the electrical contractor.

Then the primary side needs designing as well, and we include the mixing and flow temperature strategy per manifold. Send the plant room arrangement and we will coordinate the underfloor design to it.
